What Are Google Business Profile Categories?
Google Business Profile categories are predefined labels from an official, fixed list that Google uses to understand what your business fundamentally is. Every selection must come from the current Google Business Profile categories list that Google maintains — you cannot write your own or modify existing names.
Categories do most of the heavy lifting in local search. When someone searches “bariatric surgeon Miami” or “emergency plumber near me”, Google cross-references that query against the categories of nearby businesses to decide which profiles are eligible to appear. Second, they unlock features: menus, booking buttons, appointment links and specific attribute groups (like “Accepts insurance” for medical practices) are all tied to category selection.

You can set one primary category and up to nine additional categories from the Google Business Profile list. As of 2026, Google maintains approximately 4,039 categories globally — our GBP Category Finder tool searches the 3,832 currently active for US businesses, updated to reflect Google’s monthly additions and changes.
Insight: Your Google Business Profile’s primary category is the #1 local ranking factor in Google Maps, ranked above review count, proximity and website authority in Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors study. The wrong category can make your Miami business invisible to thousands of local searches every month.
Step-by-step guide
How to Choose the Right Category from the List of Google Business Categories
Choosing correctly from the list of Google business categories takes more than picking whatever sounds closest. Here is the three-step process we use when optimizing GBP profiles for our Miami clients.
1 Start with your most specific core service
Ask what is the single thing this business is fundamentally about? Not everything it offers — just the core. A cosmetic surgeon is a "Cosmetic surgeon", not a "Surgeon" or a "Medical center"; a personal-injury attorney is a "Personal injury attorney", not a "Law firm". The most specific category that accurately describes your core service is what Google rewards. Broad categories match fewer of the high-intent searches that drive real business.
2 Validate against your top local competitors
Open the Map Pack for your main keyword in Miami and look at the three businesses ranking above you. Check the primary category each one uses (right-click → view source, or a Chrome extension). If every competitor leads with the same specific category and you do not, that gap alone can be why you are stuck below them.
3 Add secondary categories for real services only
Google lets you add up to nine additional categories. Use them only for services you genuinely offer — padding the list with loosely-related categories dilutes relevance and can hurt you. Add the service lines customers actually search for, skip the rest, and keep the primary category laser-focused.
Jeff’s Tip: In over a decade of optimizing GBP profiles, the category mistake I see most is choosing something that sounds nicer rather than the most specific option available. A general surgeon listed as a “Medical center” will never outrank one listed as “Surgeon” for surgical queries. Specificity wins every single time. — Jeff Tormey, Founder, SEO Guru

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Google Business Profile category?
A Google Business Profile category is a predefined label, selected from Google's official list of business categories, that classifies what your business does. It is the primary signal Google uses to match your profile to local search queries. You select one primary category and up to nine additional categories — all from the fixed Google list — then Google maintains and updates them monthly.
How many categories are in the Google My Business categories list?
Google maintains roughly 4,000 Google Business Profile categories worldwide, and about 3,832 are available to US businesses. The list changes constantly — Google adds, renames and retires categories every month — so the right category today may not be the right one next year.
Can I create my own category if mine is not on the list?
No. You can only choose from Google's predefined list — you cannot invent a custom category. If your exact business type is not there, pick the closest specific match as your primary category, then use the services section and your business description to cover the specifics.
Does using the wrong GBP category actually affect my rankings?
Yes, significantly. Your primary category is one of the strongest local ranking factors in Google Maps and the Map Pack. The wrong category can make your Miami business effectively invisible for the searches that matter most, while the right one can lift you into the top three for your core keywords.
How often should I review my Google Business category selection?
Review it at least twice a year, and any time you add a major service line or Google updates its category list. A quarterly check is better in competitive Miami markets, where a single category change can move you up or down in the Map Pack.
